PVP Event

If you are playing online, the Old Monk is actually a PVP boss. Instead of fighting an AI boss, you may be invaded by a Black Phantom (real player). You can avoid this invasion by playing offline.

Standard Strategy

The NPC version of the Old Monk boss is very aggressive. He will pursue you relentlessly and has long melee range. Old Monk also uses Homing Soul Arrow later in the fight. The simplest way to defeat Old Monk is to block his aggressive melee attacks and then counter attack him 1-2 times. As the fight wears on, he will summon more Homing Soul Arrows. When the Homing Soul Arrows are up, keep some distance so you can easily dodge them. Other than his aggressive nature, he is not very difficult using this strategy.

No Hit / Flawless Strategy

The no hit or hitless strategy for Old Monk requires the use of the Halberd (with Sticky White Stuff) and “Hyper Mode” (explained below). As he approaches you, interrupt his advance with a quick R1 (standard attack). Then back off and let him advance on you again. Given your high damage and Hyper Mode, the fight will not last long. It is important to only attack him once as he advances on you. The Homing Souls Arrows are dangerous on a no hit run. Never be close to Old Monk when the Homing Souls Arrows are out—give yourself space to dodge them.

Hyper Mode: requires equipping the Clever Rat’s Ring and Morion Blade. Once equipped, Hyper Mode is engaged by dropping your health below 30%, typically done equipping the Magic Sword Makoto (which drops your health). Doing this, you gain an incredible 140% increase in damage.
